“Light Through Language” Gala

Celebrating the present. Building for the future.

To everyone who was able to attend last night’s “Light through language” School Gala, thank you for making it another wonderful celebration. And to those who could not join us, we have a big surprise that we would like to share!

Next year will mark our school’s tenth anniversary. We are proud to be able to say that over these past years, all of us together—teachers and staff, students and parents—have built something truly special. In celebration of all we have achieved together and in preparation for our continued growth, we are refreshing our brand, including a new name, identity, and messaging. Our goal is to present ourselves in a manner that is more reflective of who we are as a community and what we want to become as an institution.

We have been working on this project since last fall, with the help of several parents who been incredibly generous in giving their time and marketing and communications expertise, as well as an outside branding agency, and, through interviews and surveys, with input from many of you. Last night, with great excitement, we unveiled the results!

Our name
Starting in September 2018, we will call ourselves “The École”. To become a well-known institution—and a strong brand—we must have a name that everyone can easily and immediately say, understand, and remember, no matter what language they speak. The École is short, simple, and straightforward, and the combination of English and French in our new name is a hint that we are a French-American school—and reflects fluidity with which our students can move from one language to the other.

Our identity
We have designed a beautiful new logo, which we call the “Conversation Mark”. It is made up of five dialog boxes, intentionally arranged to represent close, community connection and a dynamic, bilingual conversation—while also forming a monogram E. To reflect all our individual, international origins—and our common, joyous spirit—we are adopting an unusual approach to color, allowing our new logo to appear in six different shades.

Our message
The “Light through language” phrase, which we used as the title for last night’s Gala, is also the title of our new school story. It is the shorthand we will use to tell the world about our unique focus: to instill in our students the lifetime benefits of a bilingual education, empowering them to create and connect to a world filled with possibilities. It will be supported with deep messaging we have created for every level of the school, from Maternelle to Middle School, explaining how our staff and teachers artfully blend two languages—and two educational systems—to gift our students with agile minds, open hearts, and bright futures.

We are starting the process of converting all our communications materials. Our plan is that by September, everything, including our website will be updated. We will of course have much more news for you about these changes over the next several weeks—including, importantly, what it means for uniforms. But for now, I hope you are as excited as I am about our new brand—and for our next chapter as The École!

Assetou Gaudissard, Event Planner – World of Work

The 7th and 8th graders, with their teachers Gayle Hampton, Megan Flynn, and Franck Le Martelot, will meet a new professional who will speak about his/her job and career during school hours every two weeks.

This year’s topic of World of Work 4th Edition is “Identity & Values”: What is the purpose of work? Are we what we do? Who decides the “real value” of a job? Do most people “work for a living” or “live to work”?…

 

In this 1st meeting, students had an opportunity to meet Assetou Gaudissard, who works as an Event Planner in New York. A Graduate in Communications, Assetou’s professional experiences also include Press Relations Manager and Event Coordinator for companies such as Stade de France, AOL Time Warner, and UNICEF.

An aspect of her company, New York Paris Connection, is creating business proposals and organizing various elements of a wedding: catering, designers, photographs, musicians…

During her presentation, she also shared with our students the primary values that influenced her career choice: helping others, working independently and finding a good balance between work and family.

Yilun Li, Private Equity – World of Work

The 7th and 8th graders, with their teachers Gayle Hampton, Megan Flynn, and Franck Le Martelot, will meet a new professional who will speak about his/her job and career during school hours every two weeks.

The students had the opportunity to meet last week Yilun Li, a Private Equity who worked in different places all over the world as China, the Middle East, New York…

Through these unique experiences, Yilun explained to our students the priority values in each of these countries: the importance of the network in China, the influence of the religion in some companies in the United Arab Emirates, the balance between leisure and work in the United States…

John Bennett, Press Director – World of Work

The Middle schoolers had the opportunity to meet John Bennett, Press Director of “Alouette Communications” and President of the “Paris American Club”.

He shared his lifelong interest in French and France and extensive experience, detailing step-by-step how he built a diverse career in communication, media, and cultural interests.

From New York to Paris, Canada to Puerto Rico, he explained how essential it is to develop an important network; remain flexible and open-minded to change and new developments; as well as stay true to ourselves.

Marc Levy, Author – World of Work

The 7th and 8th graders, with their teachers Gayle Hampton, Megan Flynn, and Franck Le Martelot, meet a new professional who speak about his/her job and career during school hours every two weeks.

The 7th and 8th-grade students met French author Marc Levy as part of the World of Work project.

With 50 million copies of his novels sold and translated into more than 40 languages, Marc Levy is the most widely read contemporary French writer in the world.

He discussed the immediate international success of his first novel Et si c’était vrai… -Just Like Heaven-, the rights of which have been purchased by Steven Spielberg for a film version of the novel.

He also answered in a very sincere way to the questions prepared by the students: what is your main source of inspiration? What are the cliches about the writer’s identity? Which values guide your work every day?…

The message given by Marc Levy to our students is clear: follow your dreams and express yourself!

Science Fair (Grades 1-7)

In 2015, the “Forest” was the sixth grade’s theme; their subtheme: “Ecosystems.” The first group reported on the impact of climate change on animals, including displacement; the second group reported on peoples, including the indigenous population of the Brasilian rainforest; and the third group reported on acid rain. Everyone had the opportunity to learn more about each of the subthemes.

Chinese Cuisine for the Middle School Students

On Feb 6th, Middle school Mandarin students went to the hotpot restaurant in Chinatown to celebrate the Chinese New Year. It was the first time they tried the hotpot, and it was a great experience for everyone. Hotpot originally came from Sichuan province in China!

People cook a variety of different food, meat, vegetable, tofu, etc. in a boiling broth, and finishes with a delicious dipping source. The best hotpot food students vote for are corn and Chinese noodle

China Trip 2015

Group 1: Grades 4-5

Since our students begin studying Mandarin in Third Grade, our Fourth and Fifth Graders were thrilled to take a two-week trip to China this year, including Shanghai, Hangzhou and Beijing. In Hangzhou, students were hosted by Chinese families for four days and nights, getting a taste of daily life and family customs; they also attended school with their Chinese “brothers” or “sisters” for an insider’s experience of Chinese education. Although shy at first, the hugs and fond tears we saw among them as we said goodbye made it clear the kids has really made friends. In Beijing – and on the once-in-a-lifetime walk along the Great Wall – students were truly moved. Whether discovering the secrets of the Forbidden City or gazing at the mysterious smiles of Buddhas in the ancient temples, our students made authentic contact with the wondrous and many-faceted country that is China.

Group 2: Grades 6-7, Middle School Students

This year, for the first time, EINY organized two simultaneous trips to China. The middle school trip, which included several China “veterans” who had gone on the China trip two years ago, followed a different itinerary from the elementary school trip.

Our trip began with a long travel day, as we traveled from Newark to Beijing and then on to Chengdu, a city in central China of about 14 million people in the Sichuan Province. We were greeted by Kyla, our wonderful guide. Despite a few snafus, we arrived at our hotel in a suburb of Chengdu and managed a good night’s sleep.

The next day was a big day for everyone! We visited the Chengdu Panda Reserve, where we saw adult and baby pandas. At the gift shop, several EINY students practiced their Mandarin as they bought some souvenirs to bring home.

We then went to a restaurant specializing in Sichuan cuisine, where we were served so many dishes we lost count, and ran out of room on the table! Students sampled vegetables, noodles, Kung Pao chicken, quail eggs, deep-fried banana fritters, three kinds of dumplings, vegetable and chicken soup, and fresh fruit. Despite the fact that the region is famous for spicy food, very few of the dishes were.

After lunch and a much-needed nap on the bus, we arrived at the Wuhou Foreign Languages School of Chengdu, where we were greeted with bouquets of flowers presented by the students’ hosts. We attended a brief meeting to learn about our schedule for the week, and then went to the dorms to drop off belonging. Each student was assigned a bunk, and given plastic basin for washing. The boys were in two different rooms, connected by a hallway and a shared bathroom. The girls were in one room in a separate building. There is a very strict rule prohibiting boys and girls visiting one another’s dorms.

We also ate dinner at the school cafeteria. Meals are served on metal trays, and there were six dishes to choose from, in addition to soup. We were not too hungry, as we had eaten a late lunch, and dinner here is quite early: 5:30pm! The food was quite tasty, and not too spicy.

Quin Li was the most incredible street I have ever been to, it is both beautiful in the night and day. At night, it is amazing to be there because there are so many decorations that light up around sunset, I saw colorful glowing illumination; it looks magnificent. In the day, Quin Li Street isn’t lit, but you notice a lot more detail because there is the light of the day. The stores are very amusing to observe, for example there are the minute souvenirs.” – Margaux

My favorite part of the trip was the Terracotta soldiers. This place was discovered by a very lucky farmer when he was digging a well. This was a part of the tomb of the first emperor of China that was called Qin. A fact about that tomb is that 50% of riches of China is in that tomb.” – Paul

Most Chinese students went to class after dinner. We were surprised to learn that students are in class for two hours Sunday night, which is often when tests are scheduled. WuHou is a boarding school, and students usually go home fore the weekends, but return to school on Sunday.

Students spent five nights and four full days at the school. Though it was hard for our jetlagged students to go to sleep at 9pm for the first few nights, they settled into a routine along with the Chinese students. Mornings started early with breakfast at the school cafeteria, where students especially appreciated when dumplings were served. They attended classes with their host student throughout the morning, participating in Chinese, English, math, science and physical education.

After lunch, the school organized special classes and activities for our students, including calligraphy, traditional Chinese painting, sand painting (making pictures with fine sand on a light box), and paper cutting. One day, students worked with their Chinese buddy to make a kite and then flew it on the athletic field. Most students combined symbols representing China and another country on their kites.

The school was kind enough to provide a conference room, complete with Wifi, for us to use to write emails home, work on journals, and talk about the day, and call, Skype, and Facetime with friends and family at home.

Other highlights of our week included a visit to nearby Dujiangyan, a city in the mountains and the site of an irrigation project and dam dating back to 200 A.D., and Qingcheng Mountain, where we visited a Taoist temple.

When Mr. Rivaud, our head of school, joined us, the school organized a welcoming ceremony, and treated us to musical performances and artistic demonstration by students and teachers.

Another day, we visited a public elementary school in Chengdu, where our students sang and danced with students at the school, and even played them in a soccer match.

At the end of the week, students went home with new friends to spend a few nights in their homes. For most students, this was one of the best parts of the trip, giving them a glimpse inside a Chinese home. Chinese host families even organized trips to Pizza Hit and Burger King to make EINY students feel more at home!

Lunch at a traditional Mexican restaurant

As part of our Middle School’s World Language Program, cultural excursions are a great opportunity for students to learn and experience language and culture first hand. On Friday, January 23rd Grade 7 students, Señora Gagne and Mrs. Loble had lunch at Mexico Lindo, a traditional Mexican restaurant which is right in our own neighborhood and within walking distance from EINY!

The students sampled traditional Mexican dishes like flautas de pollo, tacos del carne and arroz y habichuelas. The students ordered in Spanish and enjoyed the restaurant which displayed portraits of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. For current Spanish students, it was the perfect opportunity to practice critical oral language skills and was also an important cultural exchange for students who take another language that is offered at Ecole Internationale de New York.

Music

EINY welcomes guest artists who visit the school to share their love of music. The most recent guest was French singer Judy Cehmm who performed for the Kindergarten students.
